🔒 Privacy-First Philosophy
As a site dedicated to teaching about surveillance and privacy, we practice what we preach. Our analytics are cookieless by design and never identify individual visitors.
What Analytics We Use
We use Plausible, an open-source, privacy-respecting analytics platform, to understand how visitors use our site so we can make it better for you. Unlike Google Analytics and other mainstream analytics tools, Plausible:
🚫 No Cookies
Plausible does not use cookies at all, and does not need a consent banner under GDPR/ePrivacy.
🔐 No Personal Data
No cross-site tracking, no persistent identifiers, no fingerprinting. We cannot identify individual visitors.
🏠 Self-Hosted
We run our own Plausible instance rather than using a third-party SaaS product. Your data never leaves infrastructure we control.
📡 First-Party Only
The analytics script and its data requests are served from this domain (/stats/*), proxied to our own server. No third-party network requests happen at all.
Why We Use Analytics
Understanding how visitors interact with our content helps us:
- Improve Navigation: See which pages are hard to find and reorganize accordingly
- Focus Content: Learn which topics resonate most and need more coverage
- Fix Issues: Identify technical problems or broken links quickly
- Measure Impact: Understand if our privacy education is reaching people
What Data We Collect
Plausible aggregates anonymous, non-identifying data automatically for every visit, no banner or opt-in step required:
📈 Pageviews
Which pages are visited, and how many times, aggregated across all visitors.
🌐 Referrer & Source
Where traffic came from (e.g. search engine, social link, another site) at the domain level only.
🖥️ Device & Browser Type
Coarse device category, browser, OS, and country, derived from the request, never a precise IP address.
⏱️ Aggregate Engagement
Visit duration and bounce rate as statistical aggregates, not tied to any individual.
No unique visitor identifier is ever created or stored. Plausible does not use cookies, local storage, or fingerprinting to recognize the same visitor across sessions. Each pageview is counted independently, with no way to link it back to a specific person.

- We do NOT track you across other websites

- We do NOT sell or share your data with third parties
- We do NOT use your data for advertising or profiling
- We do NOT use cookies, local storage, or fingerprinting for tracking
- We do NOT keep data longer than necessary
Your Privacy Rights
Because our analytics are cookieless and collect no personal data, there is nothing to opt in or out of, no banner interrupting your visit, and no tracking to decline. If you still want extra protection, browser extensions like uBlock Origin or Privacy Badger work fine alongside this site.
⚖️ GDPR & ePrivacy
Cookieless analytics tools like Plausible that collect only aggregate, non-identifying data generally fall outside the scope of GDPR consent requirements and the ePrivacy Directive's cookie-consent rule, since no personal data or persistent identifier is processed. That is why this site does not show a cookie-consent banner for analytics.
Transparency & Trust
We run a privacy-focused site. So we play it straight:
- No Surprises: This page explains everything we do
- Open Tools: Plausible is open-source software you can audit
- Minimal Data: We only collect what's necessary to improve the site
- Self-Hosted: Our analytics data is not shared with an outside analytics vendor
- Educational Mission: Our goal is teaching privacy, not exploiting your data
